Founded 1954 as State university by merger of faculties of Medicine and Dentistry, formerly faculties of the University of Indonesia, and Faculty of Law, formerly faculty of Gadjah Mada University . The teachers’ College at Malang and the faculty of letters in Denpasar, Bali were formerly parts of Airlangga University, then seperated as Malang Teachers’ College and University of Udayana, Bali. Since 1961, faculty of Economics joined Airlangga University as the Surabaya Higher Institution of Economics and further faculties developed - most recent was faculty of letter founded 1996. Acquired present status of autonomous state supported university (BHMN) 2010.
