University of Mumbai
Founded 1857, but until the passing of the Indian Universities Act of 1904 its function was limited to examining candidates and arranging for the courses of study which led to degrees. Acquired right to organize teaching, arrange for University extension lectures, and publish such works as necessary for the direct educational work it was to carry out 1904. Postgraduate instruction and research introduced 1928. Reconstituted 1953.
