Founded 1860 as University of Iaşi on former Mihail Sturdza Academy created 1835, named after Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the Ruler of the Union. In 1937 two branches of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (Electro-Technical Education and Technological Chemistry) were reorganized within the 'Gheorghe Asachi' Polytechnic Institute of Iaşi and became an independent institution.
