University of Warsaw (UW)
Founded 1808 as school of law, became University 1816. Reorganized 1945. Since new Act on Higher Education 1990, University authorities are elected, and faculties are given freedom to decide on research and instruction. Branch in Białystok, founded 1968, became separate University 1997.
