Founded 1240 but traces its history to a school of Roman Law, 1056. Recognized as Studium Generale, confirmed by Frederick II 1248, and Pope Innocent IV 1252. Became a State institution 1859. A State institution enjoying administrative autonomy. Financially supported by the State, the Municipality and the Province of Siena, and other bodies.
