University of Ferrara (UNIFE)
Founded 1391 as Studium Generale by Bull of Pope Boniface IX with Faculties of Law, Arts and Theology. Closed in 1394, the institution was re-opened in 1402. Became Università dello Stato Pontificio 1598. Reformed 1771 by Pope Clement XIV. Became an independent institution 1860. A private university which became a national university 1942.
