Founded 1958 as a State university incorporating existing colleges established between 1908 and 1952. Branches in Mosul and Basrah detached to form separate universities 1967. Reorganized 1969 when ten colleges were merged to form four new Colleges of Law and Political Science, Administration and Economics, Arts, and Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine. In 1970 placed under the authority of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Financed by the government.
