Founded 1585 with faculties of philosophy and theology in a Jesuit College. Became lyceum 1782. Re-established as Karl-Franzens Universität 1827. Moved to present campus 1870. Karl-Franzens Universität is an autonomous university under the jurisdiction of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.
