Founded 1388 as a Municipal University. Closed 1798. At the beginning of the 20th century a College of Commerce, a Medical Academy and a College of Social Administration were estabished. These formed the basis for the re-establishment of the University 1919. Rheinland College of Education incorporated 1980. An autonomous institution financially supported by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and under the jurisdiction of its Ministry of Education since 1953. Since 1970 under the jurisdiction of its Ministry of Science and Research.
