Founded 1825 as Polytechnische Schule on the model of the Ecole polytechnique, Paris. Acquired University status 1865. Became Technische Hochschule Fridericiana 1885, acquired present title 2009 following merger with merged with the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. An autonomous institution under the jurisdiction of and financed by the State of Baden-Württemberg.
