Founded 1831 as Höhere Gewerbeschule (secondary vocational school), became "Königliche Technische Hochschule" 1879. Reorganized 1921 and became "Technische Universität" 1968 and "Universität" 1978. Acquired present title 2006. An autonomous institution under the jurisdiction of and financed by the State of Lower Saxony.
