Goethe University Frankfurt am Main (GU)
Founded 1914 by public subscription and with the support of the City of Frankfurt. As a result of the Krach in the 1920s the University lost most of its capital. Financial responsibility accepted by the Prussian State and City of Frankfurt 1923. Title of Johann Wolfgang Goethe adopted 1932. An autonomous institution financed by the State of Hesse.
