Founded 1457 by Archduke Albrecht of Austria and confirmed by the Emperor and the Pope. Now academically autonomous whilest financially supported by the State of Baden-Württemberg and under the jurisdiction of its Ministry of Science and Research. Teaching staff employed by the State (Land), independent in teaching and research, responsible to the above mentioned Ministry. The status of the University is guaranteed by the Constitution of the State (Land).
