Founded 1971 under the 1968 law reforming higher education and replacing former Université de Nice, founded 1965. A State institution enjoying academic and financial autonomy, operating under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Education and financed by the State. It is a member of the Coordination of French Research-Intensive Universities (CURIF).
