University of Franche-Comté (UFC)
Established 1971 under the 1968 law reforming higher education as one of the new Universities and replacing the former Université de Besançon founded 1422 at Dôle and transferred to Besançon 1691. The University was suppressed by the Revolution and replaced by Faculties of Science and Letters and School of Medicine. Reconstituted as university 1896. A State institution enjoying academic and financial autonomy, operating under the jurisdiction of Minister of Education and financed by the State.
