Founded in 1303 under the Pope. Closed during the French Revolution. Founded in 1972 as Centre universitaire. Formerly the Unit of Arts and Humanities of the Université de Provence. Acquired present status and title 1984. The Head of the Institution is its elected President. The Chancelier, who represents the Minister of Education, is the Recteur of the Académie d'Aix-Marseille.
