Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (LNU)
Founded 1661, closed 1805, reopened 1817 as a German-speaking university, destroyed 1848 during bombardment of Lviv and closed until 1851. Teaching in Polish and Ukrainian authorized 1871. Became a Polish university 1919, reorganized 1939 when the Western territories of the Ukraine became part of the ex-Soviet Union and became Lviv State 'Ivan Franko' University 1940, named after Ivan Franko. Acquired present status and title 1999.
