Complutense University of Madrid (UCM)
The origins of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid go back seven centuries, when King Sancho IV ('The Brave') of Castilla founded a study centre in Alcalá de Henares, the former Complutum. Acquired university status in 1499, under the patronage of Cardinal Jiménez de Cisneros, and authorized by Papal Bull of Pope Alexander VI. Transferred permanently to Madrid 1836, the Universidad Complutense is a public institution under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Madrid Government.
