Acquired current title and status 2012 after merger between Stavropolskij Gosudarstvennyj Universitet (Stavropol State University) and Pjatigorskij Gosudarstvennyj Gumanitarno-Tekhnologicheskij Universitet (Pyatigorsk State University for the Humanities and Technology).
