Founded 1923 as Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen (Catholic University of Nijmegen) by decree of the Sacred Congregation of Studies and by Royal Decree. The University is based on the principles of the Roman Catholic Church. Although a private institution, it receives financial support from the State, and its degrees are recognized as equivalent to and as affording the same rights as those of the State Universities. Acquired present title 2004.
