Founded 1777 by the Electoral Archbishop of Cologne, raised to University rank 1786, dissolved 1794. Refounded 1818 by William III of Prussia. Academy of Agriculture incorporated 1934. An autonomous institution financially supported by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, and under the jurisdiction of its Ministry of Education.
