Founded 1810 as Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität. Reorganized 1946 and renamed 1948 Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Faculty structure replaced under 1968 reform by series of subject sections, and replaced following reunification 1990. An independent institution financially supported by the 'Land' of Berlin.
