Founded 1665 by Christian Albrecht, Duke of Holstein-Gottorf. Became Landes-Universität (provincial University) for the State of Schleswig-Holstein 1773. Incorporated as Prussian University 1867 and re-established as Landes-Universität 1945. Autonomous institution financially supported by the State of Schleswig-Holstein.
