Founded 1970 under the1968 law reforming higher education as one of three Universities replacing the former Université de Montpellier, founded 1220 by promulgation of statutes by Cardinal Conrad and confirmed by Papal Bull 1289. The university was suppressed by the Revolution and replaced by Faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Letters of the Université de France. Reconstituted as University 1896. A State institution enjoying academic and financial autonomy, operating under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Education and financed by the State. in 2015, the Universities of Montpellier 1 and 2 merged and became Université de Montpellier. Member of the COMUE Languedoc Roussillon Universities.
