Founded 1970 under the 1968 law reforming higher education as one of two Universities replacing the Université d'Orléans-Tours, re-established 1962, but tracing its history to the original Université d'Orléans, 1306-1793. A State Institution enjoying academic and financial autonomy, operating under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Education and financed by the State.
