Founded 1972 as Hubei Petrochemical Institute. Renamed Wuhan Institute of Chemical Technology (WICT) and put under the administration of the former Ministry of Chemical Industry of the Central Government 1980. Put under the joint administration of central and local authorities 1998. Acquired present title 2006.
