Founded 1952 as Chongqing Architectural Engineering School School. Renamed Sichuan Institute of Building Materials and acquired the right to grant Bachelor degrees 1978. Renamed Southwest Institute of Technology 1993. Merged with Mianyang College of Economy and Technology and acquired current title 2000. One of 14 key universities receiving State’s special support in western China.
