Founded 1883 as Escola Imperial de Medicina Veterinária e Agricultura, became Escola de Agronomia Eliseu Maciel 1926, Universidade Rural do Sul 1960, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio Grande do Sul 1967, and acquired present title and status 1969. Under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education and Sports and financially supported by the Federal Government.
