Founded 1580 as College of St. Thomas for students of the Dominican Order. Faculty of Philosophy added 1882 by Apostolic Decree of Pope Leo XIII, Faculty of Canon Law added 1896. Became Pontifical University 1906. Acquired present title 1963.
