Founded 1988 as a branch of the Tobolsk Pedagogical Institute. Became Nižnevartovsk Gosudarstvennyj Pedagogičeskij Institut (Nizhnevartovsk State Pedagogical Institute) in 1992. Acquired currents and title in 2005.
